A professional detail at Radiant Detail represents a real investment in your vehicle in your vehicle. The worst thing you can do is undo months of careful work with poor washing technique or the wrong products. Follow this guide to keep your car looking its best between visits.
The First 48–72 Hours After a Ceramic Coating
If your detail included a ceramic coating, the curing period is critical. For the first 48–72 hours after application:
- Do not wash the vehicle
- Avoid driving in heavy rain if possible
- Do not park under trees where sap or bird droppings could land
- Keep the vehicle dry and ideally garaged
The coating needs time to fully cure and reach its maximum hardness. Disturbing it during this window can leave water marks or compromise the bonding. After the curing period, the coating is fully active and can be washed normally.
How to Wash a Detailed Car Correctly
The most common way people damage freshly detailed paintwork is by washing it incorrectly. Here's the safe method:
Use the Two-Bucket Method
Fill one bucket with clean shampoo solution and one bucket with clean water for rinsing your wash mitt. After washing each panel, rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket before putting it back in the shampoo bucket. This prevents dirt and grit being reintroduced to the paint surface.
Snow Foam Pre-Rinse
If you have a pressure washer, applying snow foam before any contact wash significantly softens and removes loose dirt before you touch the paintwork. This drastically reduces the risk of introducing wash marks.
Use a Quality pH-Neutral Shampoo
Avoid washing up liquid or household cleaners. Use a proper automotive shampoo that is pH neutral. If you have a ceramic coating, use a shampoo formulated to be compatible with coatings — avoid anything that contains wax additives, which can leave a residue on ceramic coatings.
Dry with a Microfibre Drying Towel
Never use a chamois leather or regular towel. Use a large, high-quality microfibre drying towel and blot rather than drag. Better still, use a leaf blower or car dryer to blow water out of shut lines and off flat surfaces before touching the paintwork at all.
The biggest threat to your car's paintwork isn't the weather — it's bad washing technique. Getting this right keeps your detail looking fresh for far longer.
Never Use an Automatic Car Wash
Automatic car washes — particularly those with rotating brushes — are one of the fastest ways to introduce swirl marks and scratches to your paintwork. Even "touch-free" washes use harsh chemicals that can degrade sealants and ceramic coatings. Avoid them entirely if you've invested in a detail or coating.
Deal with Contaminants Quickly
Bird droppings, tree sap and insect splatter are acidic and can etch into paint or degrade ceramic coatings if left to bake on in the sun. Remove them as soon as possible using a dedicated fallout remover or simply a damp microfibre cloth. Don't scrub — soak, then gently wipe.
Maintaining a Ceramic Coating Long-Term
A ceramic coating doesn't maintain itself, but maintaining it is straightforward. Every few months, a ceramic maintenance spray (sometimes called a top-up or booster) can be applied after washing to reinvigorate the hydrophobic properties and add a layer of protection. We recommend specific products when you collect your vehicle after a coating job.
How Often Should You Book a Maintenance Detail?
For most drivers, a professional maintenance valet every 3–6 months keeps the car in excellent condition and allows a professional to properly decontaminate the paint (iron fallout, tar spots etc.) that build up over time. If your car has a ceramic coating, this becomes even more important as a properly maintained coating will outlast a neglected one significantly.
